National Deterrent Systems ... your source for anti-shoplifting products
q & a :: electronic article surveillance

EAS is not rocket science, it's simple science!

What is EAS?

Electronic Article Surveillance (also known as EAS) is an effective anti-shoplifting system that allows you, the retailer, to put merchandise on display instead of inside locked cabinets or tethered to a rack. EAS allows your customers to "touch and feel" the goods and lets the potential thief know that they won't get away with your goods.

EAS is a protection strategy based on the use of an electronic device (an "active" theft detection tag) being attached to merchandise and another electronic device (an EAS antenna system) installed at the store exits which will detect, or sense, the "tag" if someone tries to leave the store with an item that they haven't paid for. An alarm will sound, alerting staff of the situation. It's that simple! In addition to detection of a shoplifter, EAS has proven itself to be a very successful deterrent against shoplifting.

EAS solutions come in a variety of configurations allowing you to protect store entry/exits that are single-door, multiple-door, or wide, open-concept mall store openings! Whether you're protecting hardware, clothing or sporting goods -- there is a unique solution for you... single or double antenna, hard or soft detection tags or any combination needed to do the job.

How EAS works

There are three EAS technologies currently in use. Regardless of technology, the transmitting antenna "sends" a signal at a specific frequency and the receiving antenna "listens" for a tag of specific frequency to enter the range of detection. When an "active" tag comes within range of the transmission, it wakes up and says "here I am". The receiving antenna "hears" the tag, and sounds the alarm. Click here for more technical stuff.

How the EAS process works
High visibility! Customers and thieves see the antenna system when they enter your store. They also see the theft detection tags attached to your merchandise. They know you are protected...

...your customer continues with their purchase... the thief leaves your store!

You simply choose which merchandise you want to protect. Then attach the appropriate hard or soft security tag. There are two types of security tags available to use:

Hard security tags are typically attached to "soft goods" such as clothing, by using a reusable attachment pin. By using the attachment pin with our other devices, such as lanyards or clamps, you can attach hard tags to cylindrical items like bottles and to metal items like golf clubs and hammers.

Soft detection tags, a self-adhesive paper label with a printed circuit on the back, are typically attached to "hard goods" such as pre-packed items or hang labels, for a one-time use.

When your customer brings their items to the checkout, you ring them in and detach the hard detection tags or deactivate the soft detection tags.

A strong magnetic detacher quickly removes the hard tag and reuasable pin from the merchandise without damage.

An electronic deactivator unit is used to reliably deactivate the soft tag by passing the merchandise over the unit. Where soft tags are used in low-volume, a detuning label can be placed over the soft tag to achieve the same "deactivation" results as above.

You bag the goods, thank them for shopping at your store, and as they pass through your EAS system detection zone, nothing happens. That's it! No theft, no embarrassed customers!
