National Deterrent Systems ... your source for anti-shoplifting products
q & a :: new vs used

At NDS, we promote ONLY new products for very good reason!

new vs used - systems

As with everything else in the last few years, electronic technology has made great strides.

Older systems use analog technology. This translates to slower speeds and therefore lower "pick rates" allowing merchandise to be removed undetected. Analog systems can be confused by cell phones, pagers and other electronic devices, causing false alarms. You will find that most used equipment incorporates this outdated technology.

Nothing is more embarrassing or frustrating than false alarms. It's amazing how many frustrated retailers simply unplug their systems and leave their business ripe for the shoplifter. Would-be thieves quickly recognize the deactivated systems and launch their attack!

New systems today use digital technology for faster speeds with high "pick rates". New systems incorporate Automatic Gain Control (AGC) and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to further reduce the number of false alarms. This intelligence enables the system to tell the difference between Radio Frequency noise (cell phones, pagers, etc) and a security tag.

new vs used - tags

Used hard tags can be more of a headache than you bargained for. The few dollars you save could translate into hours of frustration, trashed tags and even damaged merchandise (in the case of apparel) from faulty lock mechanisms.

Inside a hard tag is a mechanical locking device that is called a clutch. It consists of springs and ball bearings, which secures the attachment pin when it is inserted to the tag. These mechanical parts will wear, seize and even rust over time, making them loose, difficult or impossible to remove from your merchandise.

In addition, the internal electronic component will stop functioning over time.

For this reason, NDS sells ONLY new tags, but at a used tag price! Why would you even consider used tags when you can have new, full life tags for almost the same price?

new vs used - bottom line

Cheap solutions (used equipment) deliver cheap protection. When you implement an EAS anti-shoplifting system, you expect results - not headaches and continued losses. Shoplifting is a serious crime which must not be handled with the "nickel and dime" approach.

Think before you buy! Don't compromise on the protection of your merchandise or your profits.
